RadiantOne Virtual Directory Server functions as an abstraction layer between applications, identities, and data repositories. VDS re-maps the underlying sources and presents the identity data in views that are tailored and optimized for the specific needs of security applications or packages such as Web Access Management (WAM).  Once virtualized, identity and "directory" information is exposed as LDAP, DSML, SQL, and/or Web Services (or simple REST web XML).

By virtualizing identity and data sources, and translating them into a common schema (represented in XML), VDS provides the base for an "Identity Service" which supports multiple views of identity and resources. VDS leverages an organization's existing infrastructure and radically simplifies the deployment of any identity management initiative.

Without such a virtual layer, without a flexible Identity Service, Identity Management deployment is a never ending patchwork of custom-coded point solutions.  This approach is labor intensive, brittle, and involves long and costly deployment.

The RadiantOne Virtual Directory Server is flexible, delivering identity data to all IdM clients in a scalable and highly available server. At any time new data sources can be added or new views created without disturbing any current deployment.
